Set Subject Competition - 13th January 2012

I hope you will all agree that we were treated to an entertaining evening and a fine set of images. Ann Owens was our judge for the night and she coped admirably with the Herculean task of speaking about a total of 122 images, a certain amount of heckling (sorry!), and choosing winners for each of the 5 categories, all fitted around a tea break and completed by 9.31pm! Even if Ann had not been up since 5am to return from Paris (with Sheila driving), it would have been quite an impressive feat. I think we owe her a debt of gratitude for the work she put in, and I can't even fault her in her choices of winners.

From the five individual winners, John Wickett's "Hayle River from St Ives" was Ann's "Overall" and "River Scenes" winner. The other category winners were John Perriam's "Orange Poppy" (Flora) and "Is Anyone Gonna Wipe These Dishes?" (Kitchen) , my "Bicyle" (Transport), and Gill's "Crackerjack!" (TV Programme Title). Ann also went a step further and selected quite a lot of images for "Highly Commended" mentions which I think reflected both the number of entries and their quality.

Whilst we had a lot of entries, I felt it better to keep all the "B" images in. Without them we'd have had just 66 images which would not have been enough really. For those who enjoy weird statistics, nearly a third of the awarded images came from the "B" entries, so overall I think it was wise to keep them in and make Ann's job harder!
